A military first for show

BRITAIN'S premier military troop will make what promises to be a spectacular and thrilling Wirral Show debut next month.

Securing the appearance of the much-in-demand King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery is a coup for the show organisers and is expected to be a big crowd-puller.

The Royal Horse Artillery has a unique distinction. On parade with their guns, they take precedence over every other regiment and corps in the British Army.

Their appearance at the show - held once again in the New Brghton Dips on July 12 and 13 - is part of a nationwide recruiting tour to find young men and women aged between 16 and 28 to train as Mounted Gunners.

Troop captain Mark Edward said: "Expect some colourful and exciting action. I am confident that our performances will showcase the professionalism and teamwork that is inherent in today's modern Army.

"In addition, we will have the support of our recruiting team to give potential recruits all the information they want about the many career opportunities offered by both the King's Troop and the wider Army."

Show spokesman David Hearn said: "This is a very special first for us on the Wirral.

"We are honoured by their presence. They are usually to be seen at all major State ceremonial occasions including firing Royal salutes.

"They were recently on duty when the French President visited the Queen at Windsor Castle. That is just how special they are. The appearance of the high- profile and world famous King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery at our show will be a terrific highlight in a programme already packed with so much to entertain our audience."

The King's Troop will present their exciting Gun Team Display in addition to a spectacular mounted Skill at Arms' demonstration.

Captain Edward continued: "It will be an exciting and historic spectacle. Our soldiers - both men and women - will be in ceremonial uniform. Our Skill at Arms' display is particularly thrilling with horses at the gallop and my soldiers using lances, swords and revolvers. And, of course, the Gun Team display will culminate with the gun being brought into action and fired.

"We find that these displays of skill and courage set the blood racing and I think the spectators will find it just the same."
