Hoylake Lifeboat in river rescue

3:07pm Tuesday 17th June 2008

TWO men were rescued by a Hoylake Lifeboat crew after their yacht ran aground in the River Dee on June 9.

Liverpool Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat at 11.25pm after the vessel, a 31ft Mirqui class catamaran, ran aground in an unconfirmed location.

Three possible positions were given because the yacht's global positioning system was inaccurate.

It was found by the lifeboat's sophisticated radar and direction finding equipment prior to launch.

After a short run, coxswain Dave Whiteley positioned the Lady of Hilbre alongside the yacht to allow crew members Andy Dodd and Alastair Knowles to board and assist with recovery.

It emerged that the yacht was bound for her moorings at West Kirby after leaving Milford Haven.

The lifeboat crew stayed at the scene until it was safely moored up.
