Protect your garden sheds, say police

Merseyside Police in Wirral are asking residents to take extra care this summer to protect their garden sheds and garages from opportunist thieves.

Power tools, hand tools, plant containers, sports equipment, bicycles and toys are among the items often targeted by thieves, who find insecure gardening equipment easy pickings.

Neighbourhood Inspector Andy McKeown said: "Many people forget to secure their garden, shed or garage.

"As most burglary is opportunistic, if a burglar spots a chance to steal something and get away with it, they will.

"By following simple precautions you can make your property secure and prevent yourself from becoming victim to this type of crime."

Shed owners should security mark their valuable items and install security lights.

Bikes should be locked to something heavy eg. a workbench.

Never leave a garage or garden shed unlocked, especially if it has a connecting door to the house - a thief could get in and work on the inner door in privacy.

Ensure garage and shed doors are fitted with a strong padlock and ensure they are solid enough not to be kicked in.

Lock ladders inside the garage or shed to stop a thief using them to reach inaccessible windows. If there is no room inside, chain or padlock them horizontally to a sturdy bracket on an outside wall.

A thorny hedge along the boundary can work as a deterrent. But make sure that the front of the house is still visible to passers by so a burglar cannot work unseen.

For further information and crime prevention advice call into your local police station and speak to your crime prevention officer.

Here is a better plan.

Place a thin sheet of metal(with a slight lip) outside your shed.

Fill it with water.

Then conect a power supply to the door handle.
Wait for the smell of burning flesh.
Throw petrol over the robbing low life.

I have been thinking about planting a boundary hedge ( to conceal my garden shed)but am uncertain about which variety to use. Perhaps the local crime prevention officer would able to call in and advise me.
I prefer something that does not have sharp thorns, as I do not wish to cause injury to the 3 highly territorial Bengal Tigers that I keep in my back garden. The 12 foot high steel electric fence prevents them from getting out but I am as concerned as everyone else about "Cat" burglars so some advice from a friendly crime professional would be appreciated.

SPM, I suggest that you patent that idea asap.I followed your plan, and it works. My local low-life,s memorial service is on Thursday, he has already been cremated.

"As most burglary is opportunistic, if a burglar spots a chance to steal something and get away with it, they will."
1. Most burglars are out looking for something to burgle, that is not opportunism, that is deliberate intent.
2. The fact that Inspector Mckeown believes that they would be able to "get away with it" doesn't inspire much confidence in him and his colleagues!

Salim, we have no record of the family residence in your back garden masquerading a shed. Our Council Tax evaluation team will be calling soon. It is only fair that you are ripped off to the same tune as everyone else.
