WIRRAL sixth-formers have launched a high street art gallery that will showcase student talent and the work of local artists.

The Black and White Community Gallery in Liscard Road, Wallasey, will be run as a money-making business by 13 sixth-formers from Calday Grange Grammar School, as part of the nationwide Young Enterprise programme.

"We wanted to do something that would go beyond manufacturing and selling things from scratch."

It was opened last week by Wirral Cultural Ambassador and photographer Mike McCartney at a ceremony attended by civic and business figures, teachers, parents and students.

Young Enterprise is a national charity that forges links between schools and industry by inspiring and equipping young people for entrepreneurship.

More than 5,000 schools take part in the annual initiative that includes a competition to identify the nation's top student business project.

Calday Grange won the Wirral heat of the contest last year and the school has set its sights on making an even bigger splash this time around.

Link teacher for the project Geoff Bosworth, said: "It's a really ambitious project; we wanted to do something that would go beyond manufacturing and selling things from scratch and do something that would capitalise on the incredible artistic talents of our students."

The gallery will be self-funded through a number of sources including promotional fees from the school and business sponsorship.

The first month's display will feature art based on Merseyside Landscapes, marking the inception of the Capital of Culture events of 2008.

Different themes will feature in subsequent months and local artists and photographers are being invited to make contact for their own work to be exhibited.
