Rail bosses to visit 'weak link' station

WALLASEY Village train station, dubbed by commuters as one of the "weakest links" in the North West, is set to be visited by rail bosses.

The move follows a Transport 2000 survey which found that passengers cited poor bus links, difficult-to-cross roads, insecure cycle parking and poorly-lit footpaths as barriers to using their local train station.

Rail users and bosses will meet on November 19, at 2pm, to discuss the issues.

Representatives from Merseytravel, Merseyrail and Network Rail will be in attendance and will meet with Conservative Cllr Kate Wood to discuss why Wallasey Village station scored so badly for reasons such as no cycle facilities, no cycle paths, no signposts to the town centre, busy roads and numerous steps to climb before entering the station.

Merseytravel said that it is looking at methods to improve access.

But Cllr Wood said: "It's a nonsense for public bodies such as Merseytravel to promote themselves as disability friendly' when you have a station in the heart of Wallasey that is completely inaccessible to the elderly residents of Wallasey Village, anyone with a disability, in a wheelchair or even with a pram or buggy. I'm hopeful that the meeting will lead Merseytravel to reconsider their decision and will see major investment at Wallasey.
