AFTER losing his sight in 2000 due to diabetes, Danny Atkin was determined not give up on his love of golf.

Now thanks to the team at Alder Root Golf Club in Winwick, the 41-year-old can fulfil his dream and hone his skills on the course with the help of Mike Holland as his guide.

Earlier this year, Danny, who has been in and out of hospital due to diabetes as well as a kidney and pancreas transplant, posted an appeal on a Warrington Wolves fan page asking for willing volunteers to help him.

Mike quickly swung into action and offered to help.

Danny, who was diagnosed with diabetes at 10, knew he could lose his eye sight from an early age.

He said: “It all happened really quickly.

“I was working in a bar in Warrington and I started to have chest pains.

“I was told by doctors I had high blood pressure and my eye sight deteriorated from there.

“When I came out three weeks later my sight had gone. They tried laser eye surgery but it didn’t help.

“I’ve enjoyed being back on the golf course

“Mike has been great as he lines me up for the shot, helps me with my aim and gives me directions on how far to go.”

While the 41-year-old might not be able to watch the ball as it rolls in, the satisfaction of a sweetly-struck shot is now shared by himself and his guide.

Danny, who grew up in Warrington but now lives in Weaverham, would also like to thank the golf club’s owner Paul Lander and Henry Seddon, who has arranged for him to travel to Wembley to watch his beloved Wolves in the Challenge Cup final later this month.
