MEET the three Good Samaritans who gave up their time to help an elderly pensioner who fell victim to a scam by a group of conmen who targeted her in her own home.

Kind-hearted Paul Francis Fitzpatrick, John Andrews and Allan Meadows were inspired to help after hearing about how an 80-year-old woman was forced to hand over money for work that was never completed at her home on Holford Avenue in Bewsey.

The victim had been quoted £160 for work on her garden on August 11.

But, after starting the work, the three men later demanded more money, ordering her to go to a cash point to immediately to withdraw £380.

The men left with £160 and never completed the rest of the work, leaving the victim upset and distressed.

Her neighbour Lesley Stockton, 50, said: “I was gobsmacked when I heard what had happened.

“She was conned and bullied by them.

“She is such a lovely woman and she didn’t deserve this.

“Her garden was left in a state and she is shaken by the incident.”

After hearing about the scam, Paul, John and Allan all offered their services for free to finish the work that had already been started.

“They all felt strongly about this and wanted to do what they could to help,” said Lesley.

“It’s so sad that the most vulnerable people are always the ones that are targeted. It’s such a shame.”

Lesley hopes this story will act as a warning to others to be wary of door-to-door sales calls.

While some honest businesses use doorstop selling – so do fraudsters.

Cheshire Police have urged all residents to check the seller’s identity, take control by asking the questions, don’t sign on the spot and shop around and, if in any doubt, ask the person to leave or call Trading Standards.
