A MARATHON runner from West Kirby has raised more than £10,000 for a children’s cancer charity after successfully completing his second ultra-marathon.

Lee Quinn, from West Kirby, took part in The Jungle Ultra; a five-day, 230km race through the Amazon Rainforest last month in aid of Neuroblastoma UK.

One of the toughest races on earth, it took participants through the heart of the Amazon Rainforest in Peru, in an area home to some of the most dangerous animals in the world.

It involved battling through jungle undergrowth, river crossings and mountain valleys in sweltering 30 degree heat.

No stranger to a challenge, Lee - litigation executive and department manager at Birkenhead-based law firm Your Legal Friend - previously completed the six-day 257km Marathon des Sables across the Sahara Desert in July 2016.

He personally paid out over £6,500 on entry fees, flights, food and equipment for both challenges, meaning that all the funds he has raised will go directly to Neuroblastoma UK.

Neuroblastoma typically affects children under five years old and is responsible for one in six cancer deaths in children in the UK.

Lee's support for the charity began after a family friend’s child was diagnosed with the rare condition.

Recalling last month's marathon, Lee said: "This was another exhausting challenge but it was absolutely incredible to take part in.

"It's been well worth the effort and I’ve been overwhelmed with people's generosity and the support from my family, friends and colleagues.

"I know that the funds I've raised will assist Neuroblastoma UK in continuing the fantastic work that they do, and it will hopefully make a difference in helping the children and families that this terrible cancer affects."

Tony Heddon, chairman of Neuroblastoma UK, added: "Lee has done a fantastic job and we all applaud him for his efforts.

"We are really grateful, and it will help us in our fight against this awful disease."

Neuroblastoma UK raises funds for medical research to improve both diagnosis and treatment of the cancer.
