TRANMERE Rovers' boss Micky Mellon has been named Wirral sportsperson of the year.

He was selected as recipient by Wirral Sports Forum committee and will collect the honour during its awards ceremony at Hulme Hall, Port Sunlight on October 11.

Mellon successfully guided Rovers back to the football league, after a three-year hiatus, at Wembley Stadium on May 12.

The awards are hosted annually in recognition of the achievements of Wirral's dedicated sports people.

You can still nominate local sporting heroes in all categories at wirralsportsforum.co.uk

The closing date is July 30.

All shortlisted candidates will be invited to the presentation evening to collect their awards and the winners will be announced on the night.
