A MOTHER and son from Wirral are preparing to abseil 150 foot from above the great West Door of Liverpool Cathedral for a charity helping children with cerebral palsy.

Helen and Alex Dingle need Globe readers's support for the daunting challenge, taking place on August 18.

All proceeds will go to Wallasey-based Stick'n'Step.

Helen, 55, lives in Claughton and works in Liverpool as a pharmacist, has always wanted to do an abseil and jumped at the chance to take part.

Alex, 19, who is studying French and Chinese at university, promised to take the plunge alongside his mum as soon as he heard she had signed up.

The family has a special link with the cathedral already.

Helen had her wedding to Alex's dad blessed there and Alex was christened there as a baby.

Helen said: "I visited the Stick ‘n’ Step centre in Wallasey and was quite overwhelmed when I saw a conductive education session taking place.

"Every child is supported and encouraged to improve their mobility and independence to enable them to fulfil their potential.

"It costs £4,500 to cover the cost of a child’s place at Stick 'n' Step for a year and I am delighted to be able to help them in their fundraising efforts.”

Stick 'n' Step offers support services to children with cerebral palsy and their families.

The charity provides the children with totally free of charge conductive education sessions, allowing them to gain the skills they need to live independent lives.

More than 80 children, from across the region, attend these sessions weekly or twice weekly at the charity's two centres in Wallasey and Runcorn.
