CLOUDS of smoke have been visible across St Helens tonight as moorland fires burn at Winter Hill and Saddleworth.

Star readers have been sharing pictures of smoke plumes that could be seen drifting across from Horwich.

The fire in Lancashire broke out shortly after 3.20pm.

Drone photographer Steve Samosa has been among those sharing images of the smoke cloud from Winter Hill drifting across to St Helens.

Residents in Rainford contacted the Star on social media to say they were noticing the ash cloud drifting over to the village.

Meanwhile, neighbours have been reporting the smell of burning since the fire took hold on Saddleworth Moor several days ago.

Earlier today reader Tony Foster sent an image from Crank, showing what he believed was smoke from the Saddleworth fire on the horizon.
