PLANS to open a Birkenhead liberal club later in the evenings are being opposed by residents due to fears over late night noise and drunkenness.

The Wirral Liberal Club in Oxton has put in an application to the council to open until 12.30am and serve alcohol until midnight every day.

If approved, the new licence will mean the club on Shrewsbury Road is open to the public – it is currently only open to members and guests.

It will also allow the club to host live music from 9pm until midnight every day except Sundays, when those hours will change to between 4pm until 8pm.

Submitted by Georgina Martin, the move will see it open 30 minutes later than its current licence allows on weekdays, while the weekend hours remain the same.

But laying out the objections to the plans, the report said: “In respect of this application, two representations have been received from Local Residents.

“The representations relate to anti-social behaviour caused by customers of the premises whilst intoxicated. The representations also relate to noise nuisance at a late hour from entertainment.”

In order to comply with orders from Merseyside Police, the club has said it will update its CCTV systems as well as regularly assess its need for door supervisors.

It will also ask customers not to take alcohol from the building in open vessels, and they will not be allowed in the beer garden after 10.30pm.

As with all licensing applications, there is no recommendation for councillors to approve or refuse the plans when they meet to discuss them on June 20.
