POPULAR pub chain JD Wetherspoon had big plans for an 'eyesore' building on New Brighton promenade that were first approved over two years ago.

The building – the former Lacy’s Bar, which sits next door to the discount chain’s current pub the Master Mariner – is understood to have been bought in 2015.

According to the Wirral Council planning portal, the plans approved that December would have seen the two drinking establishments become one – meaning an extension of the pub on the ground floor. That would also have seen a change of use transforming the first floor into a hotel, with other internal and external alterations.

But a year later, further plans were then approved for the first floor of the derelict building on Marine Promenade to instead be turned into four new high-end apartments.

Under those plans, the ground floor would become a small bar area, with the beer garden connecting to the existing Master Mariner pub.

But as of today, not much appears to have been done to Lacy’s, which was previously an Irish-themed pub.

It has been described as an 'eyesore' on social media, with residents wondering what will now become of the building.

When contacted for comment, JD Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said despite permission having been approved, a decision on which plans to go ahead with has not yet been made, and work is yet to start.

He said: “We are still considering our options here and have not progressed anything yet.”
