PARENTS have described the road their children’s school is on as the 'street from hell', describing 'years' of fly-tipping, littering, dog fouling – and a cannabis farm discovered there last month.

Reporting children 'hop-scotching through the dog muck' on Mount Grove in Birkenhead as a common sight, they described the road as 'disgusting.'

Two parents of pupils attending Christ Church CofE School, which is at the bottom of the road, spoke on Tuesday about their fears for the street, where they also said drug dealing was a 'daily occurrence.'

They said while the road does get tidied up from time to time – and has been this week – it’s a problem that has been ongoing for years.

Council officials on Tuesday said the school and local authority worked 'closely' to deal with reported issues, and that work was underway to improve the road.

But one of the parents, who did not want to be identified due to safety fears, said: “It’s got to be worse here than in other places. The road needs to be made safe for the kids, but these problems have been this way as long as I can remember – more than 10 years. It just seems to be getting worse. Something needs to be done.

“In the mornings and after school, it’s worrying to see such a dangerous environment and so many children.”

On Tuesday, Merseyside Police confirmed two people were arrested last month after a cannabis farm was discovered in a home close to the school.

The parent said the problems of fly-tipping, littering and dog fouling were despite the primary school’s best efforts, including signs to deter people.

“I’ve seen quite a few people in the area let their dog out to do their business, not clear it up, then bring the dog back in.

“We think it’s happening because it’s normally a quiet street when the kids aren’t in school, or during school hours. You don’t get many walking down there during the day, so they think they can get away with it.”

She said while Wirral Council had attended this week to clear up the street, 'it needs to get really bad' for them to come out, adding: “I’ve only seen them here about three times in four years. Something needs to be done. It’s just horrible.”

Responding to the parents’ concerns, headteacher Marie Szydlowska said: “As a school, we always work closely with the council to deal with any concerns that arise around the school and local environment and we are happy with the relationship we have.

“We have a Safe Squad in school that helps us talk to parents and visitors about responsible car parking around school, as well as other issues that help us to improve the local environment.”

A spokesman for Wirral Council added: “We encourage people to report issues such as dog fouling, litter, fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour to us to give us the chance to investigate and target resources towards tackling them.

“With regards to the specific query around Christ Church School, we are currently working with them on the installation of a guard rail outside the pedestrian gate on Mount Grove as a further safety measure.”

Confirming reports of the cannabis farm found at a house on Mount Grove on May 22, a Merseyside Police spokesman said: “A warrant was executed and a total of 43 plants were seized, along with growing equipment. The electricity was also found to have been abstracted.

“A 24-year-old man and 41-year-old woman, both from Oxton, were arrested on suspicion of production of cannabis. They have since been released under investigation.”
