A VULNERABLE pensioner was driven to a bank and forced to hand over £2,500 to conmen who called at his Birkenhead home.

The duo called at their 77-year-old victim's home on May 21 claiming to be doing some work on the property.

They then drove him to the Halifax Bank on Wallasey Road in Liscard and told him to withdraw £2,500 pounds in cash.

It is believed that the offenders' vehicle was parked in the busy taxi rank opposite Halifax bank for a period of time.

The two then drove the pensioner home and left with the money.

Detective Constable Mike Doyle said: "This was a particularly callous incident targeting an elderly man who is very vulnerable.

"It is believed the two men approached his home the day before to say they would be carrying out repairs and then returned a day later saying they needed the money as deposit.

"They even had the audacity to drive the man to the bank to withdraw the money.

"I am sure that this taxi rank would have been very busy at the time and that somebody may have seen something or seen the vehicle – which is described as dark grey or silver – and was parked there for some time.

"I would ask any witnesses or any vehicles who who may have any dashcam footage of the area from the date and time or who may have seen a dark grey or silver vehicle parked at the taxi rank outside Wilko’s to get in touch."
