TRANMERE Rovers midfielder Jay Harris has signed a new contract which sees him at Prenton Park until the end of the forthcoming season.

Harris arrived at Prenton Park in the summer of 2015 from Wrexham and has been a key player, making a total of 121 appearances with seven goals.

The 31-year-old showed his versatility towards the end of last season when required to play at right-back, including at Wembley Stadium in the promotion final win over Boreham Wood which secured Tranmere's place back in the Football League.

He has League Two experience with more than 100 appearances across spells with Accrington Stanley and Chester City earlier in his career.

On the new contract, he said: "I'm over the moon, I can't wait to get going again now.

"It's been a couple of weeks since the season finished, the party's over now, and I'm just really happy to be part of the club again.

"I think I'd made the decision to stay before I was even offered it!

"I said that if the opportunity came my way, I'd grab it with both hands."

Looking forward to next season, having accomplished one promotion at the end of last season, Harris say he and the team will be looking to keep the forward momentum going into 2018-19.

"I said when I arrived that I wanted to take the club back to where they belong.

"We've won promotion, but the club doesn’t belong in League Two, do we? We belong higher and so the aim again is promotion.

"I've been here three years and have loved every minute of it.

"I've been in a good team, with a winning mentality and a great team spirit, so I'm looking forward to more of the same next season."

Manager Micky Mellon said: "I'm delighted to keep Jay at the football club because he's such a good footballer.

"He has been fantastic for me since I've been at the club and has shown great adaptability and attitude by helping the team in an unfamiliar position when he’s been asked to.

"He played a key role in helping the club back into the Football League and I'm sure that he’ll have an important part to play once more in League Two next season."
