These are the exact coastal locations where it could soon cost you to park in Wirral, and how long you’ll be able to leave your car there for.

It was announced this week that the controversial measures are set to be introduced by Wirral Council, which said it was trying to make up a £61m budget shortfall.

The new fees come after the council brought in parking charges for country parks earlier this year, and the local authority said this latest decision will bring Wirral into line with other areas across the UK.

But they have been heavily criticised by the opposition Conservative group, with the move the subject of a petition of more than 1500 signatures.

Charges are set to be implemented at King’s Parade and Coastal Drive in New Brighton/Wallasey, the Gunsite in Leasowe, the Derby Pool and Bayview Drive in New Brighton, North Parade and Meols Parade in Hoylake and South Parade in West Kirby.

This week, the council, which is seeking the views of the public on the plans, published maps of the areas set for the charges.

Those charges will mean £1 for an hour, £2 for all day and £20 overnight. The day tariff will run from 8am until 6.30pm, with the overnight tariff from 10pm until 8am the next day.

Charges will not apply from 6.30pm until 10pm, and will not apply to blue badge holders.

The pink lines show existing double yellow lines – where no waiting is allowed at any time.

The blue shows the areas where the council wants to introduce double yellow lines, with the yellow showing short stay parking bays, where you can stay for 15 minutes.

The new proposed charges have been attacked by the opposition Conservative group, who called them ‘unnecessary’, adding that it may mean people stop visiting or park in nearby residential roads.

The council said all feedback it received would be taken into account before a decision was made.

Members of the public invited to have their say on the proposals before June 22 here https://www.wirral.gov.uk/parking-roads-and-travel/parking/proposed-new-parking-charges
