CAMMELL Laird has been listed as a potential site to help construct the new Heathrow Airport runway.

A delegation from Heathrow Airport will be joined by metro mayor Steve Rotheram as they tour three long-listed sites across Merseyside today (Friday) who are in the running to participate in the off-site construction for the new runway.

Birkenhead shipbuilders Cammell Laird has both it's Campbeltown Road and Beaufort Road sites listed alongside Peel Ports Investments's Port of Liverpool.

It is believed, if both successful, they both will work together as a partnership.

Cammell Laird energy division managing director Jonathan Brown said: "We're delighted to welcome the Heathrow delegation.

"Heathrow expansion is a nationally significant project and we want to secure a role for our business and for the Liverpool City Region.

"Few other companies can match our history, innovation, highly skilled workforce, supply chain, facilities and our coastal location.

"We have a proven track record of being the primary contractor on major multi-million pound projects like the RRS Sir David Attenborough polar ship.

"Our bid is fully supported by our partnership with Peel and its ports and logistics infrastructure in Merseyside."

Last week Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Heathrow Airport hosted an event to consider how to ensure 'domestic connectivity' thrived from an expanded Heathrow.

Paul Cherpeau the chief executive of Liverpool and Sefton Chambers of Commerce believe that the off-site construction would be an 'excellent opportunity' for the city region as it will 'provide jobs and investment locally'.

Heathrow say they will ensure that 60% of the spend for expansion will be outside of London in an attempt to spread the investment benefits across the country.

Research from WPI Economics suggests that if this project of off-site construction is adopted more widely it could lead to a boost worth £30bn for the industry outside of the capital by 2025.

The North West is also set to benefit from more connections to Heathrow, as the arrival of HS2 will provide faster journeys to the UK’s only hub airport, reducing journey times by over 1 hour and 30 minutes.

This could also create potential for new domestic services to Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Chairman at Heathrow Airport Lord Deighton said: “Heathrow expansion is a national infrastructure project that will benefit the whole country, including right across the North West, so it is hugely exciting to have a delegation from Heathrow in the region as part of the latest stage of our nationwide tour of potential Logistics Hubs locations.

“Logistics Hubs are instrumental in our aim to ensure that expansion spreads the huge potential of tens of billions of pounds in economic benefits across the UK and will help to transform the construction industry and build a lasting skills legacy for future generations in various locations across the country and beyond London.

“We are working in partnership with local employers, councils and entrepreneurs to support new opportunities for the region arising from Heathrow expansion through new jobs, economic growth and easier and faster journeys to and from Heathrow and the North West.”

It is estimated that the Heathrow expansion will deliver 15,300 jobs and £16bn worth of wider economic benefits across the North West.
