TRANMERE Rovers army of supporters will be able to celebrate their heroes' return to the Football League during a civic reception tomorrow night.

The National League playoff winners will be congratulated by council leader Phil Davies and new Mayor, Cllr Geoffrey Watt during the event at Birkenhead Town Hall, starts at 6pm

Cllr Davies said: "Seeing Rovers back where they belong in the Football League is fantastic news for the whole borough.

“We all remember the glory days at Prenton Park, with the Johnny King and John Aldridge teams, and after the incredible result at the weekend, I am sure Micky Mellon and his team will be writing their own page in the Tranmere history books.

“I encourage every Tranmere fan to get down to Hamilton Square on Wednesday evening – bring your scarves, banners and flags and let's give the boys the celebration they deserve.”

The civic reception will take place in the main room at Birkenhead Town Hall.

Members of the first team along with team manager Micky Mellon will make an appearance on the town hall veranda to speak with fans to thank them for their support this season.

Tranmere Rovers chairman Mark Palios, who was praised for his club's success during the mayor-making ceremony at Wallasey Town Hall last night, said: "This has been a historic few days for Tranmere and it is great that the players, the staff and most of all the supporters will have an opportunity to celebrate it together with the council and the people of the Wirral.

"We are a community club, and celebrating with the community feels the right thing to do."

Paul Basnett, chief executive of Wirral Chamber of Commerce, believes having Tranmere back in the Football League can only be good news for the borough.

She said: "We are delighted that Tranmere Rovers made such a successful end to the season in gaining promotion to the football league.

"It is a very important and respected Patron Member of Wirral Chamber of Commerce, not only as a football club but also as a key business and for the work it carries out in supporting the wider Wirral community.

"Our congratulations go to all at Tranmere Rovers, Mark and Nicola Palios, Micky Mellon and the team, its staff and its loyal supporters."
