IT won't just be Tranmere Rovers flying the Wirral flag over Wembley this Saturday ... a team of girls from a Birkenhead primary school will be going for glory too.

The St Joseph's RC Primary School girls' football team will be the part of the pre-game programme at the National League play-off finals, taking on a team representing Woking FC in the final of the national NL Trust Trophy.

Representing and wearing the colours of Rovers, the girls have already been crowned Northern champions when they defeated a team from Hartlepool 1-0 at the regional finals staged in Bradford at the end of April.

Matt Nayland, a teacher at St Joseph's and manager of the girls' team, said he was very proud of their achievements.

"It has already been a magnificent performance by the team to win the Northern trophy and they have really earned what will be a very special trip to Wembley to compete for the national title.

"They will give everything they've got again in the final and I really hope that we will be returning home to Wirral on Saturday night celebrating a double success.

"After our game, we will be cheering on Rovers from the stands as they try to bring league football back to Prenton Park."

The NL Trust supports community programmes at football clubs who are members of the three divisions of the Vanarama National League.

Teams from schools all over the country, representing their local National League member team, compete for the NL Trust Trophy and Saturday will see the finals of both the girls' and boys’ competitions taking place before the big play-off final between Tranmere and Borehamwood.
