A DISPLAY to mark the centenary of the role suffragettes played to gain votes for women at Greasby Library has received praise from a local MP.

Put together by group the Greasby Knitters, the display is currently on show at the Library and looks to mark the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918.

Wirral West MP Margaret Greenwood has praised the display and it's nod to local suffragist Agnes Maude Royden.

Ms Greenwood said: “I would like to thank the Greasby Knitters for welcoming me to their display which celebrates the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918 which secured the right for some women to vote.

“This is a great exhibition and I would encourage people to call in to see it and to find out about local suffragist Agnes Maude Royden of the Frankby Royden family.

“The Knitters are well known throughout the village for their creative displays which in the past have included a commemoration of the Battle of the Somme, as well as decorating trees in colourful patterns.”

The display will be at Greasby Library until at least mid June.

Pat Walsh from the Greasby Knitters said: “This display has been a privilege to work on and an opportunity to highlight the hard work and determination of these women who campaigned for our right to vote.”

The library is open on Mondays and Thursdays between 9am and 1pm and then from 2pm until 5pm, and on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am until 1pm.

Anyone interested in joining the Greasby Knitters can pop along to Greasby Library between 10.30am to 12.30pm on Thursdays (except for the second Thursday in the month) and have a chat.
