POLICE are appealing for information after graffiti was sprayed across a historical bridge in Birkenhead Park.

A report was received at around 11.45pm on Wednesday, April 11 that graffiti had been sprayed on Swiss Bridge in Birkenhead Park causing significant damage.

In a previous incident on Thursday, 15 March graffiti was also been sprayed.

In 2015, the same bridge was subject to an arson attack which resulted in £20,000 worth of damage.

Birkenhead Park manager Paul Davies said: “These acts of vandalism would be shocking anywhere, but defacing such an historic and iconic local landmark like this – that just beggars belief.

"Birkenhead Park is recognised the world over as the first ever publicly-funded park.

"While it is our job to maintain and develop it, the park belongs to the people of Wirral – it is there for everyone to enjoy and we all have a responsibility when it comes to looking after it.

"These attacks have to stop and the people who have done the damage must be identified.

"If anyone has any information, please contact the police.”

Local policing chief inspector Nick Gunatilleke said: “This is an historic Grade II listed bridge which has been an integral part of the park since it was opened in 1847.

"To deface such a notable structure is absolutely disgraceful and I would urge anyone with information to come forward.

“We are working closely with the park rangers in relation to CCTV and we will act on all information given to find who has carried out these acts.

"If you are a parent and guardian and know of anyone in your care being involved, do the right thing and come forward as we will not tolerate such damage being caused to a place which brings so much pleasure to the community.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolHQ, call 101 quoting incident number 18200076328, or @CrimestoppersUK anonymously on 0800 555 111.
