FIREFIGHTERS came to the rescue of a 32-year-old horse that collapsed in a field in Thornton Hough.

Resident of Horse Sense Wirral, Claudia the horse had collapsed following an accident with a hay manager.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended the charity at it's stables on Neston Road at around 10.30am on Tuesday.

One fire engine and the Search and Rescue Team attended and found the horse on lying its side in a field.

The crews used animal lifting equipment to release the horse, who eventually was walked out of the field

A vet was also on hand to help.

Thankfully, Claudia managed to get back onto her feet and trotted back into her paddock.

Amy Pirie, chair of Horse Sense Wirral told the Globe: "We would like to say a huge thank you to Merseyside Fire & Rescue and the lovely Jo Ireland of Leahurst Equine Practice for coming to the aid of Claudia following a fluke accident with a hay manger, leaving her unable to stand on her own.

"We would also like to say a personal thank you to friends and volunteers who came to assist, you were all amazing, thank you so much.

"It was very touch and go, as Claudia was in shock and at 32 years of age, although very well in herself normally, you have to consider the strain on her older organs, once lifted upright and with some encouragement she put her feet down and walked back to the yard like nothing had even happened.

"She is now in a fresh rug and back out in her own little paddock, which she trotted in to, after being given the all clear by the vet."
