STATE-OF-THE-ART youth zone The Hive hopes to leave a legacy for generations to come with a brand new time capsule from Birkenhead based MPE Interiors.

The time capsule has been commissioned by The Hive’s founder patron Cammell Laird for the hub’s first year anniversary.

In a nod to Birkenhead’s maritime heritage, the 130kg capsule features a porthole that will be visible to everyone visiting The Hive as it will be laid into the floor of it’s Bright Street building.

The items that will be placed into the capsule will be selected through a consultation with young members across the Junior, Senior and Hiveability (Inclusion) sessions.

Presenting the time capsule to The Hive at an official handover, John Whetnall, director of MPE Interiors said: “We are delighted to be able to contribute to the time capsule project, which will stimulate young minds and encourage them to think of how we will be perceived by future generations.”

Youngsters are also being asked to submit ideas for items that would reflect what life was like for those growing up in the borough during the 21st Century, for example, popular music, photos capturing school and family life, fashion items, artwork and films.

Chief executive of The Hive Stuart Barnes said: “We feel privileged to be in receipt of this wonderful piece of craftsmanship from the MPE Interiors team.

"Not only will it serve to ensure The Hive and its young members make their mark on history, but it will also highlight the strong maritime links of Wirral and Birkenhead, for future generations.”
