NEW poo bag stations are set to be installed across Wirral's most popular dog walking stations in a bid to tackle muck in the area.

Wirral Council have entered a partnership with Tikspac, a Swedish company that aims to improve the environment by dispensing free biodegradable bags from stations to dog walkers who forget to bring bags out with them to stop owners from leaving their dog's mess.

After a successful trial in two parks 10 Tikspac stations will be installed in a handful of locations across the borough where many residents are likely to walk their dogs.

Once used, bags used to clean up dog mess can be placed in any public bin.

Advertising on each stand means that their installation and supplies of free bags are provided at no cost to the council.

Cabinet member for Environment cllr Phillip Brightmore said: “A very small number of irresponsible dog owners create a very big problem for many residents and visitors when they fail to clean up after their pets.

“Dog mess can blight even the most attractive parts of our borough and properly spoil a day out or a leisurely walk.

“It is the responsibility of dog owners to carry their own supply of dog poo bags with them when they are out on a walk.

"By placing these stations in 10 local dog-walking hotspots we are simply providing a complementary service.

“The responsible majority of dog owners will rarely need to use the Tikspac stations.

"But to the irresponsible minority we will be able to say, ‘there is no excuse’ – there’s a bag right there, it costs nothing; clean up after your dog.

“Wirral is a beautiful place and we are always looking at ways we can help residents and visitors keep it that way.”

• West Kirby Marine Lake path (at the sailing centre car park)
