DOZENS of Wirral roads and bridges are set for major improvements after the council announced it would allocate more than £2.5m to the cause.

It comes after the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority in February awarded £2,625,000 to Wirral council to improve its highways system for the 2018/19 year.

At a cabinet meeting on Monday, councillors will be recommended to approve proposals for more than 150 roads to be upgraded including surface dressing and foot way works.

In a report to be considered by cabinet, it said like most highway authorities, the council’s roads network was "deteriorating", and action was now needed to reduce spiralling costs in future.

Councillor Stuart Whittingham, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "The quality of roads and highways is a big priority for residents, which of course puts it at the top of our agenda, too.

"Wirral residents expect to travel on a transport network which is safe, efficient and of a high quality.

"I believe that is exactly what we deliver and I am delighted that we are now in a position to go even further.

"Wirral has been awarded £2,625,000 to ensure our transport infrastructure is fit for the future – improving our roads and making sure Wirral residents benefit from a first rate highway network.

"This investment will help bring about further growth in our economy and ensure road users across Wirral continue to experience efficient and safer journeys on our networks."

The funding allocation also includes £150,000 worth of works to bridges including Stanley Wood Footbridge and Storeton and Brimstage Road retaining wall.

There are more than 150 projects in total which can be viewed on the Wirral council website here.
