AN elderly woman miraculously emerged unscathed after an explosion in her home in Pensby.

Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire Service have confirmed they are investigating the explosion, which happened at a house in Cornelius Drive at around 8pm on Saturday.

The explosion caused ‘significant structural damage’ to the property, but the elderly woman who was home at the time, was unharmed.

It is believed the explosion was caused by an aerosol can which had fallen onto a heated hob ring.

Firefighters were on the scene for two hours and 40 minutes.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire Service said: “Firefighters were called to an incident at a property on Cornelius Drive in Pensby, Wirral, at 8.08pm on Saturday, March 17.

“Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called at 8.08pm and crews were alerted at 8.09pm. They were on scene at 8.13pm.

“Three fire engines attended the incident from Heswall, Upton and Birkenhead.

“On arrival, they found that the property was substantially damaged throughout and one resident was in the care of neighbours.

“The resident was checked by paramedics at the scene but was uninjured and did not need to go to hospital.

“The incident is believed to have involved an aerosol which had fallen on to a heated hob ring, causing an explosion.

“MFRS continue to work alongside partners Merseyside Police, Cadent and Wirral Building Control in following up this incident.”

Merseyside Police have also confirmed that an investigation will take place, but the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
