WORKERS from Great-Sankey based water company United Utilities, have walked out today, Friday, in the first of two strikes over pension cuts.

Water workers who repair pipes, treat water waste and resolve public queries were among those taking strike action at the Lingley Mere headquarters, where a picket line was staged.

The strike was called over United Utilities' plans to impose changes to a staff pension scheme from April 1, which union bosses claim will reduce members' pensions significantly – as much as £10,000 per year of guaranteed income in retirement for younger members of staff.

But bosses at the water giant say the projected cost of pensions is predicted to rise to 'unsustainable levels'.

Vic Walsh, UNISON north west regional organiser said: "This morning's strike action was very successful, there was a lot of sympathy and support from the public.

"The next step now is for the company to come back to us around the negotiating table and decide what action will be put forward in light of this reaction."

Strike action will also take place on Monday
