FORECASTERS have issued a warning for snow showers this weekend.

The Met Office extended their North West weather warning for snow across Wirral and Wales.

Bands of rain are expected to turn into snow showers during Saturday from 12am until 11pm.

Forecasters have warned that melting snow will cause an ice risk and have said it is likely that there will be delays on roads with the possibility of stranded vehicles and passengers.

Train services and flights may also be delayed or cancelled.

It is also believed that people living in rural areas may become cut off.

Power cuts are also likely.

The chief forecaster said: "A band of snow will move slowly south through Saturday morning, followed by snow showers.

"Accumulations of 1 to 3cm quite widely.

"Over higher ground above 200 metres, 5 to 10 cm is possible. Strong easterly winds will lead to drifting of snow.

"Marked wind chill will be another feature of the weather."

Highways England’s head of Road Safety, Richard Leonard, said: “Our gritter drivers will be out treating our roads around the clock but it is still important to drive to the conditions when snow is forecast.

“Make sure you keep your distance and reduce your speed if you need to travel because, even in conditions that seem normal and when the snow is not settling, it can be slippery if ice patches have formed, or where fresh salt has not been worked into the carriageway.

“Drivers should plan their journeys, monitor weather reports and pack a snow kit of blankets, food, water and a shovel if they really need to travel.”
