A CAMPAIGN for cleaner beaches in Wirral is calling for residents to support their new #RainDownTheDrain campaign.

LOVEmyBEACH is urging residents to realise that pouring liquids such as detergents and paints is having a negative affect on the cleanliness of waterways and survival of wildlife.

Any unwanted liquids should be taken to the nearest household recycling centre to be disposed of safely.

They say that outdoor drains operate very differently from those conntected to people's homes and that these drains run directly to the nearest river or stream.

Drains that are connected in the home carry dirty waste water to waste water treatment works, where intelligent processes are applied until the water is clean again and can be safely released into the natural environment.

Designed to carry rainwater only, if pollutants such as engine or cooking oil, paints and chemical wastes are poured down outdoor drains they will travel directly into seas without processing.
