A TEAM of 'Smokefree community champions' is being recruited in a bid to help people in Wallasey who are trying to kick the habit.

Smoking is seen as the single most significant cause of poor health and early deaths in the borough and Wallasey Constituency Teams is looking for a team to help their communities tackle the problem.

The Team is working together with specialist organisation A Better Life (ABL) to provide free training for people across Wallasey to help smokers quit.

They aim to give communities the opportunity to help themselves by creating "Smokefree Community Champions" who will help those who want to stop using tobacco.

These Champions will also act as ambassadors, raising awareness of the risks from smoking and promoting the local stop smoking service provided by ABL within communities.

According to the Annual Report 2017 by Wirral's Director of Public health: "Smoking remains the single biggest risk factor for early death in Wirral and is the primary reason for the gap in life expectancy between our most and least deprived areas."

The Constituency team is seeking active community members/groups to become Smokefree Community Champions – people who will be trained to advise others on how best to quit smoking.

Training is open to those working or living in Leasowe & Moreton East, Moreton West & Saughall Massie, Liscard, Wallasey, New Brighton and Seacombe.

Training sessions will take place nexr Wednesday, March 21 from 10am –midday and Thursday, March 22 from 10am–midday.

Please email wallaseyteam@wirral.gov.uk or phone Michelle Gray on 666 4902 to book your place once confirmed, the venue for training will be confirmed. Out of pocket travel expenses can be paid.

Spaces are limited so early booking is advisable.
