RSPCA inspectors need Globe readers' help to find the owner of a dog that had to be put down after it was found emaciated and staggering in a Birkenhead street on New Year's Eve.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was taken into RSPCA care after being discovered by a member of the public in Whetstone Lane.

Sadly she was so poorly that the vet made the decision to put her to sleep to prevent further suffering.

RSPCA inspector Lisa Lupson said: "The dog was in a very poorly condition.

"Initially we thought she had been hit by a car but it turned out that she had simply been badly neglected.

"She was very wobbly on her back legs and her left hind foot was swollen with an infected toe. She was so weak and clearly very poorly.

"This poor dog had clearly been neglected for a long time and there are no excuses to treat a dog in this way.

"We are appealing for anyone who has any information about who previously owned her to get in touch with us on 0300 123 8018.

"All calls are treated with confidence."
