SIX paddocks on a farm adjoining Woodchurch High School have been upgraded by a housing developer to make the farm's animals more comfortable during the long and cold winter months.

Hard-paved standings were installed in the paddocks last month during the work, which was carried out by builders from Stewart Milne Homes.

Now completed, the finished project will benefit 30 animals including alpacas, pigs, sheep and pygmy goats.

Linda Hackett, teacher and farm manager at Woodchurch High School told the Globe that throughout the wet winter months, the paving will be paramount for the animals' welfare.

It will help to reduce the potential risk of foot problems caused by the animals standing in muddy clay-based soil.

The farm's animals are looked after by Woodchurch pupils.

One hundred of the students are studying for a BTEC qualification in animal care. Twenty five registered volunteers work alongside the pupils on the school farm.

The school also has six classes for children with special needs.

The newly-installed hard paving will allow easier access for those in wheelchairs, to give them a first-hand experience of animal care.

Reflecting on the work, Linda Hackett, teacher and farm manager at Woodchurch High School, continued: "The adjoining community farm is a unique aspect of Woodchurch High School.

"Investment in the farm ensures that it remains an educational asset to the school and local community.

"As a self-funded farm we are incredibly grateful for the help from Stewart Milne Homes.

"It allows us to prioritise the animals' welfare.

"The positive effect that the farm and its facilities has on all generations, abilities and backgrounds is priceless."

Stewart Milne Homes is currently constructing a new Wirral community of 180 family homes at its Upton Pines development near Upton.

The housebuilder worked with its ground team from Upton Pines, Grantreel Construction Ltd, who offered the man power to build the paving over three weekends in December.

On the company's contribution involvement in the project, Lynne Vogel, sales manager at Stewart Milne Homes, said: "Where possible we like to support local communities.

"Woodchurch High School Farm is a key part of the community surrounding our Upton Pines development.

"We hope that the paving will provide an enriched environment for the animals and enhance the experience for students, volunteers and locals alike.

"In the next 12 months, we look forward to continuing our strong relationship with Woodchurch High School and delivering a number of other exciting projects."
