HOUSEHOLDERS are being warned of the dangers of storing aerosol cans too close to fan heaters after an explosion at a property in Bromborough.

Firefighters were first called to the premises on Friday, December 8 following a small explosion involving canisters containing lighter fluid.

The canisters exploded due to their proximity to a nearby electric heater, causing a fire ball that damaged paperwork and a shelving unit.

No-one was injured.

Yesterday, Sunday, December 17, firecrews attended a bedroom fire at a property on Juniper Close in Stockbridge Village, Knowsley caused by radiated heat from a fan heater igniting a nearby butane gas canister.

Firefighters used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire, which caused severe damage to the bedroom and upstairs of the property. No-one was injured.

Watch Manager Tony Harland said: "In both these cases, aerosols have ruptured and exploded as a result of being too close to fan heaters.

“The resulting explosions caused significant damage to the properties involved.

"Thankfully no-one was hurt but these incidents had the potential to cause severe and potentially life-threatening injuries.

"Any heat source impinging on an aerosol can will cause the internal pressure to increase which will eventually lead to a rupture.

"We therefore strongly urge members of the public to keep aerosol cans far away from any heat source when they are in use.

"Always pay attention to the instructions on aerosol canisters and do not expose them to sunlight or any source of heat."
