POLICE were called to reports of a shooting after a fight is believed to have broke out at Birkenhead Park.

Merseyside Police have confirmed that they attended the park at around 1.15pm on Saturday, December 9 after a number of people reported hearing loud bangs and witnesses said a weapon had been fired.

A search of the scene was carried out but at this stage no evidence of a shooting had been found.

Reports had suggested that up to four cars had driven into the park and a group of people had become involved in a fight.

A search of the area was carried out but nobody was detained.

An investigation is currently underway and detectives are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Detective inspector Matt Caton said: "I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity of Birkenhead Park who may have seen any suspicious vehicles or seen anyone acting suspiciously to get in touch.

"At this stage nobody has presented themselves at hospital with any injuries and an investigation is underway into the circumstances of what happened.”
