STRONG gales of up to 70mph are looking likely to hit Wirral this week.

Met Office forecasters have put a yellow weather warning in place for wind after gusts of 65 to 70mph are likely to hit between Wednesday at 9am until 7am on Thursday.

Commuters are being warned of delays by road, rail, ferry and air with restrictions in place on roads and bridges.

Outbreaks of rain will add to difficult travel conditions.

The chief forecaster said: "Gusts of 65 to 70 mph are expected along exposed coasts and over high ground such as the mountains of Wales, the Moors of SW England and the Pennines.

"Gusts of 50 mph are likely more widely.

"Winds will gradually ease from the west during the night, finally easing from the far South East of England around dawn on Thursday.

"Outbreaks of rain, some of it heavy, will accompany the strong winds and will add to the difficult driving conditions."
