PLANS have been submitted to introduce traffic lights on M53 in Wallasey.

In a bid to reduce accidents, Wirral Council will hold a consultation about the potential scheme which will see lights introduced at junction 1 near to the B&Q roundabout.

The new traffic signals would be introduced on the eastbound M53 slip approach, westbound A5139 approach, A554 northbound approach and the A554 southbound approach.

The potential scheme will form part of the Council's 2017/18 Transport for Growth - Capital Programme to help reduce the number and severity of personal injury accidents.

Conservative Councillor Lesley Rennie said: “While the Council has agreed to act to reduce accidents at this busy junction, it would be really useful if they could also look at reinstating the street lights along the North Wallasey Approach Road that leads to it.

"Many of the drivers from Wallasey are met with darkness as they approach this junction.”

This scheme come after a similar plans to install lights near the junction of the M6 and M62 in Warrington, Cheshire, as part of a £7 million project to reduce congestion on the motorway.

Currently lights are used to control traffic joining motorways from slip roads, but the Highways England plans will see them placed on the link road from the M6 onto the eastbound M62.

In a poll run by the Globe last week, 55% of readers believed that motorway junctions should not have traffic lights with just 45% agreeing with the scheme.

Any objections must be made by Monday, December 4.
