WIRRAL'S 'Running Man' John Hammond has been selected to receive the prestigious Point of Light award by the Prime Minister Theresa May.

John Hammond from Oxton is currently raising cash for charity Scope with 31 marathons in 31 days challenge.

Scope provides support, information and advice to more than a quarter of a million disabled people and their families every year.

Overall John has raised £50,000 for many charities and causes over the years.

This includes raising £5,650 for the Bennet family after a gruelling 12-hour run from New Brighton to Seacombe Ferry Terminal on Friday night.

More recently, John completed a 50 mile ‘Tower to Tower’ run for nine-year-old Lucy Moroney who has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

Every week day the Prime Minister will recognise an 'outstanding individual volunteer' for the Daily Point of Light Award.

First established by President George H. W. Bush in 1990 more than 5,000 US Points of Light have been awarded in the USA.

UK Points of Light was developed in partnership with the US programme and launched in the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street in April 2014 under David Cameron.

Hundreds of people have been awarded by the programme with candidates doing everything from tackling knife crime to supporting families of dementia patients.

Due to his significant fundraising John has also been picked as one of the four regional finalists in this year's Pride of Britain Awards for the Fundraiser of the Year category.
