CLARE Balding gave an inspirational talk to pupils at a Wirral school as part of a new book tour.

The acclaimed writer, BBC broadcaster and radio presenter spoke to children in years four to eight at Birkenhead School, as well as children from other local primary schools, as part of the visit promoting The Racehorse Who Disappeared.

She shared childhood tales and inspirational stories from Olympians and Paralympians she has worked with throughout her career.

Clare also spoke about important and valuable messages for the children and encouraged them to think of their own ideas for a story.

A spokesowan for the school said: "She spoke of how important it was to be yourself and to follow your dreams, not letting others stand in your way.

"There was plenty of audience participation, with pupils from the invited schools standing on stage sharing their own story ideas.

"The talk was a huge success and Clare was met with many questions at the end, relating to her own experiences, as well as questions asking for tips and advice on how to write your own bestseller."

Clare also signed copies of her book for children to take home and have as a memory from the day.

Harry Fitzherbert, head of The Prep at Birkenhead School, said: "We were absolutely delighted to welcome Clare to the School.

"The children were enthralled and they left Clare's talk inspired by what she had to say, with messages that will hopefully stay with them for life."

The event was organised in conjunction with Linghams Booksellers in Heswall and Clare is one of a number of high-profile speakers who have visited the School this year.

These have have included former England Cricket Captain, David Gower, OBE and TV presenter and actor, Sir Tony Robinson, who is making a return visit to the school on November 21.
