POLICE are appealing information after a dog attack in Arrowe Park.

At around 6.30pm on Thursday a man was walking his Labrador on Arrowe Park playing fields on Arrowe Brook Road when a woman had 'pitbull-type' dogs off their leads in a fenced tennis court area in the park.

One of the dogs is reported to have broke through a fence and attacked the Labrador causing the dog multiple injuries.

The owner also suffered puncture wounds and an injured thumb.

The incident was reported to police around 7.45am today and they are keen to speak to the woman who was with the 'pitbull-type' dogs.

The woman is white, in her 40s, 5ft 8in, of large build, with blonde mid-length hair and wears glasses.

Acting local policing inspector Marc Roberts said: "This was an appalling attack which has left a dog requiring surgery.

"We are keen to speak to this woman at the earliest possible opportunity, and any witnesses who may have seen the incident or these dogs in the park yesterday evening.

"I want to emphasise that anyone walking their dog in our local parks needs to be mindful of their dogs' behaviour at all times and keep their pet on a lead if it is liable to be aggressive towards other park users.

"We will not tolerate irresponsible dog ownership on Merseyside and want to maintain all our parks as safe and welcoming places to be."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to call 101 quoting crime reference number 0517239516 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
