A WIRRAL teacher has been raising cash to help fund her relative’s hospital treatment after he was hit by a car in Mexico.

Teresa Fajardo, a private tutor from Mexico, hopes to raise £4,500 for her nephew once removed, Eduardo, who was left fighting for his life after he was run over by a van in Mexico.

The 22-year-old had to have one leg amputated, while suffering multiple broken ribs.

As there is no NHS equivalent, Eduardo’s family have to pay for his costly treatment with Teresa stepping in to fund his prosthetic leg.

Teresa, who has worked in schools across Wirral including Birkenhead High School and West Kirby Grammar School, said: “In April, my cousin’s son Eduardo was hit by a car in Mexico.

“Eduardo lost his front top teeth and he had to have a leg amputated. He had a collapsed lung and broken ribs. He was also in intensive care for 48 hours fighting for his life.

“His family struggled with the initial costs, as there is no such thing as the NHS.

“Many people close to Eduardo have donated money to help – I was simply going to do the same but after speaking to his dad over Whatsapp he showed me some more graphic photographs of his injuries – I deeply felt for this poor lad.

“He is only 22 and has had a palate made with temporary front teeth to avoid his lips sinking inwards.

“He is recovering well and I am full of admiration for him. He is grateful of surviving and not sad about his losses.”

She added: “On talking to my family and friends I started gathering donations and completed a tombola in Birkenhead High School Academy.

“I’ve also done a coffee morning, and a table sale of second hand items.

“I raised a total of £1,600 and have already passed this on to the family.

“The dental work will be around £1,500 and the leg £4,500.

“He is in rehabilitation, strengthening and shaping his stump.

“Hopefully, with all going well in four months he could be ready to be fitted with a mew prosthesis and start to learn to walk with it.

“Wouldn’t it be an amazing present for Christmas for Eduardo?

“A big box with his leg, with a big bow - however a small detail is getting the money together.

“I am a runner and have done six marathons since 2014 but I haven’t raised money for any of them.

“I’d love to do something for Eduardo as this is closer to home but it is for a single individual and many marathons don’t allow you to raise cash for one person and understandably only support registered charities.

“Eduardo’s family income is so low, he is not likely to ever fly abroad so bringing him over here is unlikely.”
