DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses after a woman was sexually assaulted as she slept in her home in Birkenhead yesterday.

The 25-year-old victim had been asleep in bed on Sunday morning and awoke at about 8.30am to find that she was being sexually assaulted by a man who had managed to get in to her home.

The woman challenged the man and he ran off.

The offender is described as a white male; late 20s, approximately 6ft tall, with mousey blond hair, shaved very short.

He had a chubby build with a round face and was wearing a black and blue coat.

Officers are appealing to anyone who may have seen a man acting suspiciously in the area of Price Street, Cleveland Street and Corporation Road area of Birkenhead around the time of the incident to come forward.

Crime Scene Investigators are carrying out forensic examinations at the scene and house-to-house inquiries are being carried out.

Detectives will also be examining local CCTV footage in a bid to try and identify the offender.

Det Insp Matt Caton said: ”Our investigation is in its very early stages and we are working closely with the victim, who is extremely distress following this horrendous ordeal.

"It is important that we establish from her exactly what happened during this attack.

“We are taking the incident extremely seriously and extensive enquiries are being carried out by detectives to progress the investigation.

"I understand that members of the public will be concerned following this incident, but I would like to reassure them that local neighbourhood officers will be patrolling in the area this week and anyone with information or concerns should approach them and they will be happy to help.

"I am keen to hear from anyone who was in this area of Birkenhead around 8.30am on Sunday morning who may have seen anything unusual, or suspicious.

“If you saw anything of note, please call us, your information could be vital to our inquiries.”
