A 28-year-old Wirral man broke down in tears and accused the victim of lying when he was convicted of rape and assault by a Liverpool Crown Court jury.

Gregory Gibson became further distraught and began hyperventilating and his supporters rushed over to the dock to try to console him, and in heated scenes began hurling abuse at the prosecutor.

Judge Robert Warnock remanded Gibson, who had been on bail, in custody to await psychological and probation reports.

Gibson, who sat open-mouthed as the jury of seven women and five men returned their unanimous verdicts, lost his fight to hold back his tears and raged: “No, no” and "She’s a liar” before being led to the cells.

The defendant, of Brackenwood Road, Bebington, had been found guilty of rape and two assault charges and he admitted another assault charge, all involving the same woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Charlotte Kenny, prosecuting, had told the court that just before raping the woman Gibson had grabbed her head with both hands and bitten her on the jawbone leaving her distressed and scared.

He called her a “slut” and “a whore” and when she began to cry he laughed and grabbed her by the face again.

On a later occasion he snatched her phone off her and when she grabbed it back he pushed or grabbed her upper back and she spun round and fell backwards down the adjacent stairs.

“She slid down a number of steps to the landing hitting her head in the process.

"He did not come to her aid, instead he stood over her and put his hands around her throat tightening his grip and then grabbed her head and began to bang it against the wall,” said Miss Kenny.

He was abusive and downstairs he kicked her in the stomach and slapped her face. “Having been told she was ’only good for one thing’ she was kicked in the genitals causing her significant pain.”

The court heard that she was hysterical and he started to kiss her but then bit down leaving teeth mark either side of her mouth.

He kept verbally abusing her but then started to cry and said he was under stress.

The police became involved and arrested Gibson after she decided to reveal her ordeal after he had again assaulted her by punching her in the mouth.

When interviewed he denied the allegations and claimed she was lying, said Miss Kenny.

He is to appear for sentence on September 22.
