EVER wanted to experience Viking life in Wirral?

An special event at Storeton Woods on Saturday, July 29 will see Wirhalh Skip Felagr, Wirral Ship Fellowship and Wirral Vikings recreate the warbands ecampment in the woods that were in place before the Battle of Brunanburh.

The area between the woods and Brimstage Hall is thought to be the most favored location for the battle which had a dramatic effect on the way England came to be.

The free event in conjunction with the Friends of Storeton Woods will start from 10.30am and will offer experimental archaeology, combat displays, living history and talks.

In May local historian Dave Capener explained how 2017 is a significant year in Wirral's Viking history as this marks the 1080th anniversary of the Battle of Brunanburh - a battle which has become associated with Bromborough and in particular an area near to Storeton village.

Andy Quick from Wirhalh Skip Felagr told the Globe: "Dave is one of our members and he has written extensively on the subject from the viewpoint of the Warriors and the logistics of getting so many men to the location for the battle.

"Our group love to demonstrate everyday life of the Wirral Vikings as well and how they lived locally and the group is known in the academic world for their knowledge and skills allowing techniques and ideas to be tried and tested in as real a situation as possible."

The Skip Felagr focuses primarily upon the Hiberno Norse Vikings who settled the Wirral in 902 AD and offer a range of educational experiences to suit all requirements from talks and living history displays.
