A YOUTH bowling club are holding a number of events to celebrate its 50th anniversary to bring more young people into the sport.

Wallasey Youth Bowling Club began around 1967 by Eric Cummings and in 1987 Ray Arthur took over as secretary in 1987 and still runs the league today.

After the original Wallasey bowl was knocked down in 2003 the club moved to Chester for nine months, then to Liverpool Edge Lane for another nine months while the new bowling lanes were rebuilt.

In 1988 Wallasey played its first National Tournament which was being held in Sunderland.

The club then went on to win its first gold medal in 2015 and in 2016 the under 21s won with a score of 2,512 becoming the new national record holders.

On May 20, a reunion and tournament was held at the Riverside Bowling alley, New Brighton with deputy mayor Geoffrey Watt and deputy mayoress Anne Watt who joined in and bowled with the youth team.

Sponsor Nichola Ross and general manager with North West Construction UK Ltd said: “Wallasey Youth Bowling Club is a friendly group aged between 6 and 21 that meet every Saturday morning – it is an ideal way to socialise and learn a new sport.

“There is the opportunity to take part in tournaments both locally and nationally, some of the young bowlers have gone on to represent England playing in Europe.

“Alternatively, just to spruce up on your bowling skills to beat your parents next time you bowl as a family.”

To join turn up at Riverside Bowl, New Brighton any Saturday at 10.15am and speak to reception and they will point you in the coaches direction.
