UNUSED land at a Wirral primary school has been transformed into an outdoor learning space for its pupils.

The Spinney was officially opened by West Wirral MP Margaret Greenwood during the summer fair at St Joseph's Catholic primary school in Upton on Friday afternoon.

The land's revamp was made possible thanks to the commitment, hard work and enthusiasm of a team of volunteers.

Maria Anderson, acting deputy headteacher said: "This year we have seen an amazing transformation of The Spinney, an unused outdoor space at the back of our school.

"The commitment, hard work and enthusiasm of a team of volunteers who have achieved this has been overwhelming.

"We are all so excited to use this wonderful space to enhance so many aspects of school life.

"We are now busy planning for a wide range of opportunities that we will develop in The Spinney in the new academic year.

"The project is a celebration of a whole community coming together.

"It really is a fabulous end to our school year".

After opening the Spinney, Ms Greenwood was taken on a tour by two pupils, spoke in detail about the transformation.

Maria Anderson, acting deputy headteacher, continued: "We were delighted to welcome our MP to our school to celebrate our wonderful achievements."

"She spent a considerable amount of time at the school on Friday.

"She spoke to the team of parents and grandparents who led the change and was so impressed with the huge transformation from an overgrown, unused area to what we have now - an amazing outdoor learning space."

Margaret Greenwood said: "I was delighted to open The Spinney at St Joseph’s Primary School in Upton.

"Parents, grandparents, staff and volunteers have done a fantastic job creating a wonderful outdoor learning environment for the school.

"The Spinney includes bug hotels for children to explore insect life, veg and herb planters, communal seating areas and a magical fairy garden.

"The pupils at St Joseph's were very excited about this addition to their school.

"I am sure that the children and teachers will get a great deal out of this wonderful outdoor learning space."
