A COURT Order is being sought to remove a group of travellers that have been encamped on a popular Wirral beauty spot for almost a week.

Upton Meadow is managed by the Woodland Trust and enjoyed by residents from Greasby, Upton and across the borough.

However, since more than 20 vehicles moved onto the site on Thursday police have been repeatedly called out to the area after concerns from residents.

The site has been strewn with rubbish and litter and regular visitors to the Meadow have been intimidated by drunken and abusive behaviour.

Campaigners have been granted permission by the court to apply for an order to have the camp removed within the next two days.

Conservative ward councillor Wendy Clements said: "Upton Meadow is a well-loved local amenity.

"The behaviour of those living in the vehicles since Thursday is totally unacceptable.

"We've been working with the Woodland Trust and they have today been granted permission by the Court to apply for an order tomorrow to have this encampment removed, ideally within the next 48 hours.

"The clean-up operation will then get underway, using the council's contractors, and paid for by the Trust.

"We then need to secure the site to prevent this kind of thing from happening again.

"Upton Meadow is there to be enjoyed by everyone in Wirral, not spoiled by temporary visitors who couldn't care less about the wider community."
