COLOURFUL posters encouraging teenage girls to take up exercise have been unveiled during a special roller disco in Birkenhead.

They were launched to promote Wirral's version of This Girl Can - a national scheme by Sport England celebrating women of all ages taking up exercise - during the event at Hive Youth Zone.

Aimed at girls aged 13-17, it follows research that revealed teenage girls were falling behind in the amount of exercise they are doing a week.

Some professional skaters from the Wirral Roller Derby Team were on hand at the Hive Youth Zone to show off some skating skills and help those who needed it stay on their feet.

Cllr Bernie Mooney, cabinet member for children and families, said: "It's fantastic to see Wirral's version of This Girl Can going from strength to strength.

"The posters will be seen across Wirral and are a great way of highlighting the fun side of taking part in sport.

"Using the teenage ambassadors in the photos has really localised it.

"I'm so proud of the ambassadors for the campaign; they are using their own time to help make a real difference to girls their ages health and confidence.

"The roller disco highlighted an activity which is fun, different and might be something teenagers would consider as exercise in future."

The Wirral team is looking for more girls aged 13-17 to join their squad to help decide the next stages of the campaign.
