KINGSWAY Academy could close at the end of August according to a statement released by the Department for Education.

This information comes after the school said it was 'business as usual' at the academy.

However the Department for Education say they agreed to close Kingsway Academy in March following a request from the Northern Schools Trust - the body in charge of the school.

A Department for Education spokesman said: “In March 2017, following a request from the Northern Schools Trust, the department agreed in principle to the closure of The Kingsway Academy.

"Our priority is to ensure all children receive the best possible education and where that is not happening action must be taken.

“Should the closure go ahead the school will close no earlier than August 31 2017.

"This will allow those students who have begun studying for their GCSEs to complete their courses.

"Should the school close, we will work with the Trust and the local authority to identify alternative places for students to ensure their education is not disrupted.”

Worried parents have raised their concerns and demanded answers to the rumours.

One parent told the Globe a meeting with around seven parents and the headteacher yesterday morning to discuss concerns about the future of the academy but were told they knew nothing about the closure.

In a statement the school said: "Despite communication from other sources regarding the future of The Kingsway Academy, as far as the school, its Governors and the Northern Schools Trust are concerned it is business as usual.

"Planning for September is well underway and ongoing and the meetings which have been organised this week for year six and year 10 parents will go ahead as scheduled.

"We cannot and will not get involved in the current wave of briefings and comments on social media.

"Our only concern is the running the school for the benefit of our students and their families.

"When we are in a position to share more factual information we will."

Wallasey MP Angela Eagle said that she has requested an urgent meeting with the education minister after finding out about the plans.

Ms Eagle wrote on social media: "A number of constituents have contacted me about rumours around the potential closure of The Kingsway Academy.

"On first hearing rumours about the possible closure of Kingsway, I spoke to the Regional School's Commissioner about the situation.

"I was informed that the government minister is due to make a decision on the future of the school imminently.

"I am in the process of seeking an urgent meeting with the minister in order to get clarity over the situation and convey my concerns.

"I am deeply unhappy about the way the multi-academy Trust has gone about this.

"It is completely unacceptable to even consider closure of the school without a proper consultation, or before arrangements have been made to ensure that all pupils have a place at another school.

"The school provides an education for hundreds of pupils in the Wirral.

"Both pupils and staff deserve better than to be left in the dark over the future of the school which, as we all accept, has been experiencing very difficult times.

"That this is just a few weeks before the summer holidays and the subsequent start of a new term makes the timing of this particularly awkward.

"I am also concerned about the future of the school's modern campus in the event of closure. It is a PFI school which will have to be paid for until 2031. It is a vital piece of local public investment which must not be lost.

"I will provide an update once I have met with the minister and have more information about the future of Kingsway. There must be clarity for parents and pupils as soon as possible."
