WORRIED parents have raised concerns over online rumours that a Wirral school could close.

Posts on social media suggest that Wirral Council was told of plans to shut Kingsway Academy in Moreton on June 15.

Councillor for Moreton and Saughall Massie Chris Blakeley has urged parents to ask the school to 'come clean' over the plans.

He said: "Message to all the parents who have children at Kingsway Academy.

"Make sure that today you ask the School to 'come clean' on its plans for the future.

"This is not a Council run school, however it's likely the Council will have to step in if the school closes.

"The schools commissioner informed the MP as I understand.

"The current position is that the education minister is 'minded' to close the school and the council has made a plea for more time.

"This would also help us as a council to start to discuss options for the building.

"The council will contact the schools commissioner stressing the urgency for a decision."

However the school insisted that as far as they are concern it is 'business as usual'.

Chief executive of Northern Schools Trust Nigel Ward said: "Despite communication from other sources regarding the future of The Kingsway Academy, as far as the school, its Governors and the Northern Schools Trust are concerned it is business as usual.

"Planning for September is well underway and ongoing and the meetings which have been organised this week for year six and year 10 parents will go ahead as scheduled.

"We cannot and will not get involved in the current wave of briefings and comments on social media.

"Our only concern is the running the school for the benefit of our students and their families.

"When we are in a position to share more factual information we will."

One parent told the Globe a meeting with around seven parents and the headteacher this morning to discuss concerns about the future of the academy but were told they knew nothing about the closure.

Wirral council's assistant chief executive David Armstrong said: “Kingsway School is an Academy, and therefore decisions on its future do not rest with the council.

"However, the education and wellbeing of the pupils is of paramount importance, and we will be supporting them as much as possible in the future.”

Wallasey MP Angela Eagle said on social media she was arranging a meeting with the education minister as soon as possible after hearing about plans.

In 2015, Kingsway Academy announced it would be temporaily axing its sixth form following a review to ensure the “correct allocation of resources” during the school’s transition to academy status.
